Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role:

Mana Ake Tairāwhiti is a new initiative delivering early intervention psychosocial support to tamariki and kura on the East Coast. Our mission is to strengthen the mental wellbeing of our young people by uplifting mātauranga Māori, fostering resilience, and building strong connections through culturally grounded wānanga in kura, homes and communities.

We are now looking for a Kaiwhakatere to join our passionate team to continue bringing this kaupapa to life across our East Coast kura.

As a Kaiwhakatere, you will lead and facilitate wānanga designed to promote mental wellbeing and resilience among tamariki and rangatahi. You’ll use creative, culturally grounded methods to inspire and engage students, weaving together hauora, whakapapa, wairua and whanaungatanga in a safe, supportive environment.

This is a 12-month Fixed-Term Full-time position, based on the East Coast between Hiruharama and Potaka. This is a mobile role requiring regular travel across the East Coast.

 

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako - Essential Skills &Experience: 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Facilitate interactive wānanga in kura, using a strengths-based, Māori-led approach to support mental wellbeing.
  • Use haka, waiata, pūrākau, toi Māori, and other creative tools to engage and uplift tamariki and rangatahi.
  • Create safe, inclusive spaces for kōrero and connection around hauora and resilience.
  • Collaborate with Tumuaki, kaiako, whānau and community leaders to strengthen local delivery.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of workshops for teachers, parents, and wider community groups.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and kaupapa-based upskilling.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Confident facilitator with experience working in kura or community-based settings.
  • Skilled in tikanga Māori, including haka, waiata, te reo Māori, pūrākau, toi Māori or mau rākau.
  • Passionate about improving hauora outcomes for tamariki and whānau.
  • Strong relationship builder and communicator across age groups and communities.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and comfortable with regular travel across the rohe.
  • Open to learning, growth, and contributing to a collective kaupapa.

Operating Competencies:

  • Full, clean NZ Driver License.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a range of skills, knowledge, and attitudes that contribute positively to the organisation’s purpose.
  • Able to establish a good rapport with people.
  • Being flexible, innovative, and open to continuous learning in a changing environment.
  • Trustworthy and confidential.
