Our story

Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou has evolved from a historic legacy of self-determination for Ngati Porou. Our story begins with the establishment of  our own Iwi governance entity, Te Runanga o Ngati Porou. Here are some key milestones of our journey.

January 1985

Hui Taumata at Ruatoria, focused on setting up a Ngati Porou organsation. A huge voluntary effort went into establishing the Runanga.

September 1987

Te Runanga o Ngati Porou was established under its own act of parliament, as a body corporate that operates as a Maori Trust Board. It was charged with administering its assets for the general benefit of its beneficiaries – nga uri o nga hapu o Ngati Porou mai i Potikirua ki Te Toka a Taiau (the descendants of the sub- tribes of Ngati Porou occupying the region from Potikirua to Te Toka a Taiau

1988

Pakihiroa Station purchased as turangawaewae for all Ngati Porou.

1989

Ngati Porou Forests Ltd established, with support from Te Runanga o Ngati Porou

1990

Hikurangi  maunga transferred back to Ngati Porou. TRONP become licence holder  for Radio Ngati Porou.

1991

Te Whare Wananga o Ngati Porou established.

1992

TRONP  begins delivering social services.

     
  • WAI  272 Treaty Claim lodged with the Waitangi Tribunal by Api Mahuika on  behalf of TRONP
  • Ngati Porou Forests becomes Ngati Porou Whanui Forests Ltd.

1993

TRONP establishes Porou Ariki in Kaiti, Gisborne

1994

Puanga  Station purchased.

1995

Ngati Porou education grant fund established.

1995

Ngati  Porou Hauora established

1998

First iwi education partnership, Whaia te Iti  Kahurangi, formed with the Ministry of Education.

2000

Te Runanga o Ngati Porou Fisheries Ltd established (renamed Ngati Porou  Fisheries Ltd in 2002).

2006

Porou  Ariki Trust established to administer Ngati Porou's commercial fisheries interests.

2007

Mandate secured to negotiate to settle all  historical Ngati Porou treaty claims.

2008

Nga Hapu o Ngati Porou Foreshore and Seabed Deed of Agreement signed with the Crown.

2012

The Ngati Porou Claims Settlement Act  passed. Through the passing of the Act, the post-settlement govenance  entity, Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou, takes the place of Te Runanga o  Ngati Porou as the sole governance entity for the Iwi.

June 2012

NgatibPorou Holdings Company established, and Ngati Porou Hauora becomes a subsidary of Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou.

June 2013

Toitu Ngati Porou Established.

April  2014

Ngati  Porou sign the Crown-Ngati Porou Relationship Accord as part of the Ngati Porou Treaty of Waitangi settlement. The purpose of the Accord is to improve outcomes from government investment for Ngati Porou and develop and strengthen Ngati Porou-Crown relationships.
