Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou wishes to publiclyacknowledge and give thanks for the strong, collaborative response betweenourselves, Tairawhiti Emergency Management and the New Zealand Defence Force(NZDF) in supporting whanau, hapu and iwi across the rohe during a time ofsignificant challenge.

Working together, a coordinated request was madefor NZDF support to strengthen on-the-ground capacity and provide practicalassistance to communities impacted. Through this joined-up approach, 140 NZDefence Force personnel were deployed across Tairawhiti, providing logistical, welfare and recovery support alongside iwi, marae and local leadership.

Their contribution reflected not only operationalexcellence, but also respect for tikanga Maori, manaakitanga and iwi-leddecision-making. This response reaffirmed the importance of partnershipgrounded in trust and shared values.

For Ngati Porou, the presence of the NZ DefenceForce also carries deep historical significance. Our people have a proud legacyof service through leaders such as Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu VC and ArapetaAwatere, whose courage and leadership continue to inspire generations. Theirlegacy reminds us that service to others is woven into the fabric of who we areas Ngati Porou.
