The official 28th Maori Battalion website is dedicated to the men who served with New Zealand’s 28th (Maori) Battalion during the Second World War, and to their whanau and friends
The 28th Maori Battalion was our major Maori presence in World War Two. Many Ngati Porou served in the battalion, particularly in C Company.
The site contains many of the stories of the battalion, from their formation and battles through to life on the home front and life after the war.
The site includes an historical overview of the Battalion at war, an interactive map, contributed stories and memories, resources for teachers and school students, and a selection of photographs, audio files (oral history, radio recordings and waiata) and videos.
The real taonga of the site though are the stories of the 3600 men who served in the battalion, in the Battalion Roll. Many of them have stories attached, and whanau often go and contribute their own memories and stories of their tīpuna.
The official 28th Maori Battalion website contains many Ngati Porou taonga, so get busy reading!
