Two years ago the Department of Conservation (DOC) ran 18 workshops around the country to discuss the permit system that exists today and how could it be made easier for users of these materials such as feathers from native birds or access to plants on DOC managed reserves. One of those workshops was held in Gisborne at the Lawson Field Theatre where a robust meeting was held and users of these resources made their views clear. It was also and educational hui because many there had no idea of the legal requirements around using materials from DOC Managed Reserves and using road killed native bird feathers.
Work has been carrying on from that hui and DOC now have a follow up hui as promised planned for the 12th October 2016 in Gisborne. The hui is to discuss the proposal (Nga Aitanga a nuku) aimed at Iwi and those present at the first hui.
