Intergenerational learning and the activation of community action plans are the focus of the latest Ngati Porou reo revitalisation programmes to go live, with applications now open - Wednesday 23 August 2017.

In June, the first of a series of five funding programmes ‘Nga Pu Whakaha i te Reo (Reo Champions), was launched, and the successful applicants were recently selected (see full list below). The next two programmes to be rolled out publically provide an opportunity for Ngati Porou collectives to implement activities that help nurture, protect and maintain Ngati Porou reo and its distinctive dialects.

‘Hapai i te Reo’, is aimed at supporting marae, hapu, rohenga tipuna and taurahere collectives with developing and/or implementing their own reo specific action plans. Funding for this programme is available for up to two years, and successful applicant groups will receive up to $10,000 to use towards projects which serve to regenerate Ngati Porou reo within their communities, and achieve the objectives of their specific language plans and strategies.

‘Puaki te Reo i te Kaenga’ is aimed at supporting whanau, who have mokopuna/tamariki, with strengthening their proficiency of Ngati Porou reo within the home. Up to $10,000 per successful applicant group is also available for this funding programme. Marae, hapu, rohenga tipuna and/or taurahere collectives will identify 20 whanau within their roopu, and over the course of a 12 month period the households of these whanau will be mentored. It is anticipated this programme will reach 400 Ngati Porou whanau, over a two year period.

The last two remaining Reo revitalisation programmes have been restricted towards specific Ngati Porou target groups. ‘Whakapakari i te Reo Ako’ is aimed at strengthening the reo fluency and competency amongst educators. A putea of $40,000 will be available over two years to assist collectives of Ngati Porou kaiako and kaiawhina to strengthen their knowledge, proficiency and use of Ngati Porou reo. In lieu of an application process, a hui will be held with Ngati Porou educator providers, within the next few months, to confirm how this funding can be best utilised to support this sector.

The purpose behind ‘Nga Puna Rauemi Reo’ is to assist the development of Ngati Porou reo resources which maintain and promote te reo o nga hapu and increase the proficiency and use of te reo. Co-funded alongside Te Taurawhiri i te Reo Maori, a  putea of $150,000 has been made available to Radio Ngati Porou over two years to support the digitisation of their vast library of audio and visual archives, and to produce new learning resources. Among these new resources is an upcoming online video series featuring a number of Ngati Porou moteatea.

The five funding programmes implement some of the objectives identified in the Ngati Porou language strategy, “Te Reo Ake o Ngati Porou: Toitu Te Reo”. A total funding pool of approximately $500,000 has been provided over a two year period to execute these programmes, which are the responsibility of Toitu Ngati Porou, the cultural development arm of Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou,

Application forms can be requested from the Ngati Porou Te Reo Programme Co-ordinator at Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou. The close off for applications is by the end of Labour Weekend, Monday 23rd October. More information about the programmes can be found at www.ngatiporou.com/toitutereo
