Ngati Porou kei te Kainga - Ngati Porou at Home

 About a sixth (12,402) of Aotearoa’s total Ngati Porou population (71,895) live within the Gisborne rohe (2006 Census). Of the 12,402 living on the Coast about 4,212 (24 percent) live in Gisborne with 8,202 (66 percent) living in rural areas. By mere virtue of living within the wa kainga, Ngati Porou kei te kainga have an additional cultural duty, the responsibility of ahi ka – keeping the home fires burning.

Ngati Porou are a young population with 58 percent of those within the rohe under 30 years of age; a figure consistent with the age distribution of Ngati Porou throughout Aotearoa. However, 6 percent of Ngati Porou kei te kainga are aged over 65 years. The runanga works to ensure services are available within the rohe to best support the Ngati Porou population.
