Mission

The vision of Ngati Porou will be achieved through affirming the Matauranga Ngati Porou and its application to cultural, economic, environmental and social developments that contribute to the prosperity and survival of Ngati Porou whanau and hapu, while actively enhancing the mana motuhake of Ngati Porou.

Principles

The runanga's overarching principles, based on the Ngati Porou quadruple bottom line, are:

cultural relevance and revitalisation
economic growth and prosperity
environmental sustainability
social responsiveness and responsibility.

Key goals

The runanga's seven key goals are to:

retain, enhance, practise and promote Ngati Porou ancestral heritage
develop a Ngati Porou social agenda and action plan founded on Ngati Porou tikanga and responsive to Ngati Porou aspirations, needs and priorities
actively encourage and support Ngati Porou in the development of whanau, hapu, marae, taura here and the runanga
Reconfirm and sustain Ngati Porou rangatiratanga and its application at whanau, hapu and iwi levels.
support Ngati Porou whanau and hapu to achieve an optimum return on their assets and resources
support Ngati Porou development through sustaining an optimum return on Ngati Porou assets managed by the runanga
support and enable the return, retention and protection of Ngati Porou taonga (whenua, takutai).

The key priorities for the 2008-2009 financial year are outlined below.

Cultural relevance and revitalisation

Complete Te Reo ake o Ngati Porou Strategy.
Develop and distribute three Matauranga Ngati Porou resources.
Maintain and enhance Ngati Porou Calendar of events.

Restoration of Matauranga Ngati Porou

Scope Ngati Porou Curriculum for roll-out in Ngati Porou East Coast schools/kura.
Gain approval for Raparapaririki (Ngati Porou Early Childhood Education) strategy.
Ngati Porou self determination.
Settle Ngati Porou historic Treaty claims.
Ngati Porou hapu approve Ngati Porou Foreshore and Seabed Settlement.
Review and achieve mandate for Te Runanga o Ngati Porou structure.
Hapu adopt and implement Ngati Porou Hapu Success framework.
Future-proof Ngati Porou relationship with Crown as part of Treaty settlement .
Hapu complete and adopt Ngati Porou Hapu Customary Fisheries framework.
Establish hapu governance entities that affirm and uphold Ngati Porou tikanga and meet third party compliances eg, Foreshore and Seabed Deed of Settlement.

Social Wellbeing

Complete Ngati Porou Wellbeing Model and indicators.
Integrate Whanau Oranga services.

Economic Growth and Prosperity

Establish Ngati Porou Commercial Board.
Increase returns and profitability of runanga businesses.
Complete an integrated Ngati Porou research and development strategy.
Complete feasibility report on establishment of business incubator.

Environmental

Maintain proactive role and participation in climate change (nationally and regionally).
Develop a Ngati Porou sustainable development strategy.
