Ngati Porou Whakapapa
Ano te ataahua o te noho tahi a nga taina me nga tuakana i raro te whakaaro kotahi.
Whakapapa links us and provides the basis for our interactions with each other and our connection to the land and the many ancestors from whom we descend, it shapes our character and informs the lives we live.
The whakapapa provided are not exclusive to Ngati Porou, but are of great relevance in describing descent lines from Maui Tikitiki a Taranga to our eponymous ancestors Porourangi and Hamoterangi. They also illustrate the intimacy of the relationships we have with our kin to the north, our tuakana Te Whanau a Apanui, and our relations to the south, Rongowhakaata, Mahaki, Tamanuhiri, Kahungunu and Ngai Tahu.
We offer these as an insight into our shared heritage; the challenge is to trace the lines and connect yourself to these tipuna. The Runanga may be able to provide some information and assistance to help you with this. We also encourage you to contact members of your own whanau who may be able to assist.
